Building Guides

Use the building guides below to help you get started on your project. These guides were designed by the Colorado Chapter of the International Code Council. While Boulder has adopted the ICC codes, we have also added some more specific criteria for certain areas of community concern. These guides are not specific to Boulder’s code, but they are a good place to start. To find out exactly what you need to do to apply for a permit, go to our “Where to Begin” flowchart on the Permits page.

The City of Boulder recommends you hire a licensed contractor, architect and/or engineer to assist you in applying for permits and building your project, and you may be legally required to hire a professional for certain projects. A list of city licensed contractors is available in the Planning & Development Services (P&DS) Center, 1739 Broadway, third floor. You can also find resources in the local phone books.
