Boulder airport manager to retire

City of Boulder Airport Manager Ray Grundy will retire this summer after 18 years as the city's airport manager and a total of 26 years at the City of Boulder . Mr. Grundy plans to travel and spend more time with his family.

“I have very much enjoyed my association with the city for the past 26 years as well as the opportunity to manage the airport for the past 18 years. I certainly will miss the airport and the people I have worked with on a daily basis for most of my adult life,” said Mr. Grundy. “I am looking forward to having more time with my family and taking a little more time to smell the remaining flowers along the way.”

The Boulder Municipal Airport (BMA) started operations as a small dirt landing strip in 1928 and now serves the general aviation needs of the community. In addition, the airport has served community safety needs by supporting law enforcement and fire protection activities. There are currently 234 aircraft based at the airport. Businesses operating from the airport include a commercial glider operator, glider-soaring clubs, flight training school, aircraft maintenance facilities, aircraft charter operations, and aircraft sales.

Based on 2003 figures, approximately 68,000 flights are conducted annually. The airport generates revenue and supports itself through lease of the airport facility and hangars to commercial aviation contractors and individual aircraft owners.

“During his tenure, Ray transformed the airport into a community asset,” said city Transportation Director Tracy Winfree. “His commitment to managing the airport in a fiscally self-sufficient manner and to safe air travel is greatly appreciated.”

Prior to his career with the city, Mr. Grundy was a veterinarian, and continues to hold his veterinarian's license with the State of Colorado . He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966-1972 as a naval aviator, which included a tour of duty in the Vietnam War.
